An Uninvited Guest

The afternoon sun cast a golden glow over the immaculate lawns of the Blackwood estate. William stood on the terrace, a crystal glass of champagne in hand, surveying the sea of high-society guests. Everything was flawless, exactly as the wealthy real estate mogul demanded. But the elegant atmosphere shattered when a murmur rippled through the crowd near the rose gardens.

A young man had bypassed the security gates. He stood in stark contrast to the designer suits and silk dresses, wearing a grubby, oversized t-shirt and faded jeans. In his hands, he clutched a simple, worn wooden flute. William felt a surge of cold fury. This was his crowning social event of the season, and it was being ruined by a street beggar.

"Hey! Get him out of here!" William shouted, pointing an angry finger at the intruder.

Two burly security guards immediately stepped forward, grabbing the boy's shoulders. But instead of resisting, the young man looked directly at William, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

"Please, I need money," the boy pleaded, his voice trembling. "My mom is sick. We have nothing left."

William sneered, unimpressed by the sob story. He wanted to humiliate the boy enough to ensure he never returned.

"Then earn it," William said coldly, gesturing to the instrument. "Play."

The crowd snickered, but the boy didn't play. Instead, he slowly lowered the wooden flute. With a shaking hand, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, creased photograph. He stepped past the guards and handed it to William. When William looked down at the faded image of a young couple holding a newborn baby, his breath caught. His hands began to shake, and his champagne glass shattered on the stone floor.

"Where... where did you get this?" William whispered in complete shock.
"My mother said you'd know your son," the boy replied softly.
