An Arrogant Soldier Mocked a Weathered Veteran, Until One Shot Revealed His True Identity
The Ghost of the Range
The heat of the Nevada desert rose in shimmering waves off the cracked asphalt of the outdoor shooting range. At seventy-one, Arthur didn't move with the fluid grace of his youth, but his posture remained unyielding. Wearing a weathered canvas coat that had seen far better days, he walked toward the registration counter. He wanted nothing more than a quiet afternoon to keep his reflexes sharp, but the universe had other plans.
A group of active-duty soldiers stood nearby, laughing loudly and boasting about their scores. At the center of the group was Cole, a thirty-one-year-old soldier with a smug grin and a dark combat vest. Cole watched Arthur approach, his eyes filled with easy contempt. To Cole, Arthur was just another relic of the past, a senior citizen who had wandered into a young man's game.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"
Cole’s voice carried across the range, drawing snickers from his comrades. Arthur didn't flinch. He slowly reached for his registration form, and as he did, his sleeve pulled back, exposing his inner forearm. Etched into his aged skin was a dark, faded tattoo of a black wolf, its jaws open in a silent howl.
Cole noticed the tattoo, but his arrogance blinded him. He let out a dismissive laugh, folding his arms across his chest. "Nice ink, old man. Did you get that at a gift shop?"
Without a word, Arthur selected a heavy, scoped bolt-action rifle from the rack. He stepped up to the firing line, adjusting his grip. Cole stood right behind him, snickering. Arthur took a slow, deep breath, aligning his sight with a steel target placed five hundred yards away.
"I only need one shot,"
Arthur murmured. He pulled the trigger. The deafening crack of the rifle echoed through the canyon, followed instantly by the sharp, metallic clang of a perfect bullseye. Cole’s jaw dropped. He stared through his binoculars in utter disbelief, a single tear of shock slipping down his cheek. He recognized the tattoo now. It was the mark of the Ghost Unit, a legendary black-ops squad. Arthur was a living legend.
