An Arrogant Young Soldier Mocked an Old Veteran, Until He Saw a Hidden Tattoo
A Smug Welcome
The heat of the Nevada desert was unforgiving, baking the dusty gun range under a blazing noon sun. Walter, a rugged seventy-three-year-old veteran with short white hair and a weathered face, walked quietly toward the registration counter. He wore a simple, dark canvas jacket, his boots kicking up small puffs of dust with every step. To the young soldiers gathered for the annual tactical competition, he looked like a grandfather who had taken a wrong turn.
Standing near the counter was Ryan, a thirty-one-year-old soldier in a state-of-the-art dark camo tactical suit. Ryan was known for his flawless record and his equally unmatched arrogance. Seeing the old man approach, Ryan smirked, nudging his buddy. He stepped in front of Walter, blocking his path.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Ryan asked, his voice dripping with condescension.
A few onlookers chuckled. Walter didn't flinch. He slowly adjusted the sleeve of his dark canvas jacket, revealing a faded black wolf tattoo on his forearm. Ryan glanced at it, laughing dismissively as he folded his arms. "Nice ink, old-timer. Did you get that to look tough?"
Without a word, Walter stepped up to the firing line. He picked up a standard-issue scoped rifle, feeling the familiar weight. He took a single breath, locking onto a target placed at an extreme distance. Ryan opened his mouth to mock him again, but before he could speak, Walter squeezed the trigger.
A single, thunderous crack echoed through the canyon. The bullet tore through the absolute dead center of the target. A perfect bullseye.
Walter lowered the rifle and looked calmly at the stunned young soldier.
"I only need one shot," Walter said.
Ryan stammered, his face pale. "What? Impossible!" Just then, the base commander walked out, his eyes locking onto Walter's exposed forearm. The commander snapped to attention, a tear of reverence in his eye. "That is the mark of the Ghost Unit," the commander whispered.
