Previously: When head chef Richard caught an eighteen-year-old stranger messing with his signature dish, he was ready to throw him out. But one bite of the food changed everything.

The Shadow of the Past

Richard's fork clattered to the metal prep table. He gripped the edge of the counter, his knuckles turning white as his mind raced back two decades. Arthur Vance. The name echoed in his mind like a tolling bell. Arthur had been Richard's mentor, the brilliant chef who had taught him how to balance flavors, how to respect the ingredients, and how to cook with soul. But when corporate investors offered Richard the chance to open L'Etoile, Richard had used a legal loophole to cut Arthur out of the partnership, leaving him with nothing.

Now, standing before him was a teenager with Arthur's sharp, piercing eyes. The boy wiped his hands on his apron and stood tall, refusing to be intimidated by the older chef's towering presence.

"My name is Tyler," the boy said, his voice quiet but steady. "And Arthur Vance was my father."

Richard felt the air leave his lungs. "Tyler... I don't know what to say. Your father was... we had a disagreement, but I never meant for things to end the way they did."

"He died five years ago, Richard," Tyler interrupted, his eyes flashing with a mix of sorrow and anger. "He died in a tiny kitchen in Ohio, cooking for people who didn't appreciate his genius. But he never stopped talking about you. He said you were the most talented chef he'd ever met, but that you traded your soul for a shiny dining room."

Richard bowed his head, the weight of a twenty-year-old guilt pressing down on his shoulders. "Why are you here, Tyler? Is this about revenge? Are you here to expose me?"

"I'm here because tonight is your last chance," Tyler said, pulling a folded, stained piece of paper from his pocket. "Christian Sterling is sitting at table four. He's here to write the review that will either save L'Etoile or shut it down. My father wrote this menu before he died. It's the menu you two always dreamed of cooking together. Let me cook it with you tonight, or watch your life's work crumble."

Richard stared at the handwritten menu, recognizing Arthur's elegant script. He was terrified. If Tyler wanted revenge, he could easily sabotage the critic's meal and ruin Richard forever. But looking at the boy's determined face, Richard realized he had no other choice. He had to trust his mentor's son.
