Previously: When Mark's vicious Rottweiler escaped her chain, he feared the worst for the young stranger on his ranch. But a whispered secret changed everything.

Mark walked forward as if moving through a dream, his boots crunching softly on the gravel. The stranger looked up, and as the fading sunlight hit his face, Mark felt a shockwave of recognition ripple through his chest. Those piercing green eyes belonged to his estranged son, Leo, who had vanished five years ago after a devastating ranch fire that took his mother's life. Everyone in town, including Mark in his grief, had blamed Leo's negligence for the tragedy.

The Return of the Prodigal Son

"Leo?" Mark choked out, tears welling in his eyes. "Is it really you? How did you do that with Maya? She hates everyone."

Leo kept his hand on the sleeping dog, his expression filled with a mixture of pain and resolve. "She remembers me, Dad. I used to sneak out and feed her when she was just a pup before the fire. But I didn't come back just to say hello. I never started that fire, Dad. I was set up."

Before Mark could process his son's words, the loud roar of an engine shattered the quiet evening. A sleek black SUV tore down the ranch's gravel driveway, kicking up a massive cloud of dust. It screeched to a halt, and out stepped Carter Vance, a powerful local land developer who had been trying to buy Mark's land for years, accompanied by the local sheriff.

"Step away from the boy, Mark!" the sheriff yelled, drawing his weapon. "Leo is wanted for commercial burglary. He broke into Mr. Vance's corporate offices last night."

Leo stood up slowly, his face pale but determined. "I didn't steal anything, Dad. I retrieved the original blueprints and the insurance fraud documents. Vance burned our ranch down five years ago to force us to sell, and he killed Mom to cover his tracks. I have the proof right here in my bag!"
