My Angry Dog Was Set To Be Put Down Until A Drifter Whispered A Secret
Previously: When Mark's vicious Rottweiler escaped her chain, he feared the worst for the young stranger on his ranch. But a whispered secret changed everything.
The tension in the yard was thick enough to cut with a knife. Carter Vance sneered, stepping forward with an air of arrogant authority. "The boy is a delinquent and a liar, Mark. He's trying to distract from his own crimes. Sheriff, arrest him immediately before he does any more damage to this community."
A Father’s Choice
Mark looked at the sheriff, then at his son, whose eyes pleaded for trust. For five years, Mark had lived in a prison of grief and regret, blaming the wrong person. He looked down at Maya, who had suddenly woken up. Instead of attacking Leo, she stood defensively in front of him, her chest puffed out, letting out a low, menacing growl directed straight at Vance.

"I've made a lot of mistakes, Vance," Mark said, his voice steady and cold as steel. "But I'm not making another one today. Sheriff, if you want to arrest my son, you'll have to go through me. Let's see this proof."
Leo reached into his jacket and pulled out a water-resistant flash drive, tossing it to the sheriff. "That contains the digital correspondence between Vance and the arsonist he hired, along with bank transfers dated three days before the fire. It was backed up on his private secure server."
The sheriff plugged the drive into his rugged police tablet. As the documents loaded, his face turned pale. He looked at Vance, then back at the screen. Vance panicked, lunging forward to grab the tablet, but Mark stepped in, blocking him with a firm shoulder block that sent the developer sprawling into the dirt. Maya barked fiercely, pinning Vance to the ground with her gaze.
"It's over, Vance," the sheriff said quietly, drawing his handcuffs. "You're under arrest for arson, conspiracy, and murder."
As the flashing police lights faded into the night, taking Vance away, Mark turned to his son. With tears streaming down his face, he pulled Leo into a fierce, long-overdue embrace. Maya sat beside them, wagging her tail in the quiet moonlight. Sometimes, the wildest storms are calmed not by force, but by the quiet truth of a heart that refuses to give up on family.
