Previously: When a world-renowned chef caught an intruder altering his signature dish, he was ready to ruin him. But a single taste of the food revealed a shocking family secret.

A Ghost from the Past

Charles stared at the young man, his chest heaving with indignation. He snatched a clean silver tasting spoon from his apron pocket, fully intending to taste the ruined scallop, spit it out in disgust, and call the police. But the moment the flavors hit his tongue, the anger died in his throat. His eyes widened in sheer disbelief.

The balance of sweetness, acidity, and a subtle hint of smoked cherrywood was absolutely flawless. It was better than his own recipe. In fact, it was a taste Charles hadn't experienced in fifteen long years—a secret flavor profile that belonged to only one man.

"Where did you get this recipe?" Charles whispered, his hands beginning to tremble. "Who gave this to you?"

The young man's expression hardened, a flash of deep-seated resentment passing through his eyes.

"My father," he replied quietly. "His name was David. The man you betrayed and pushed out of this very kitchen twenty years ago. My name is Lucas."

The words struck Charles like a physical blow. Twenty years ago, he and David had co-founded L’Etoile. David was the quiet culinary genius, while Charles was the ambitious businessman. Driven by greed and vanity, Charles had used a legal loophole to buy David out for next to nothing, taking sole credit for all of David’s brilliant recipes. David had died in obscurity and poverty five years ago, leaving his family with nothing but his old recipe journals.

"I came here to see if the man who stole my father's life was truly a genius," Lucas said coldly. "But your kitchen is failing, Charles. You lost your soul when you betrayed him. My mother is sick, and we need the money. I can save your restaurant tonight, but it will cost you."

Before Charles could process the shock, his head waiter burst through the kitchen doors, his face pale with panic.

"Chef! Arthur Vance is demanding his appetizer right now! If it isn't served in one minute, he's leaving!"
