The air in the tiered briefing room at Nellis Air Force Base was heavy with the scent of floor wax and nervous sweat. Row after row of sage green flight suits filled the lecture hall under the harsh glare of fluorescent lights. Sarah Jenkins adjusted her flight logs, her expression calm despite the palpable tension in the room. She was a veteran pilot, but to this squadron, she was a new face.

She had barely taken two steps toward an empty seat when a loud, mocking voice shattered the low hum of conversation.

"Wrong room, sweetie. This briefing is for real pilots."

The speaker was Lieutenant Kyle Carter. At twenty-nine, Kyle was known for two things: his undeniable talent in the cockpit and his insufferable arrogance. He stood in the center aisle, pointing a finger directly at Sarah, before throwing his head back with a loud, theatrical laugh. A few of his sycophants chuckled, while the rest of the room fell into an uncomfortable silence.

Sarah didn't flinch. She stood her ground, her dark hair pulled back into a tight, flawless bun. Her cool blue eyes locked onto Kyle's smug face. She didn't raise her voice, but her words carried a quiet authority that silenced the remaining whispers.

"Are you finished, Lieutenant?" she asked coolly.

Kyle’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, annoyed by her lack of fear. He took a step closer, sneering as he tried to reassert his dominance in front of his peers.

"Go fetch coffee before the real mission starts," he retorted, crossing his arms.

The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. Sarah simply stared at him, memorizing every line of his arrogant face. She knew exactly who he was—and more importantly, she knew what was about to happen next.
