Previously: When Captain Vance tried to forcefully eject a civilian woman from the military base mess hall, he thought he was enforcing the rules. He had no idea who she really was.

The Escalation of Power

Vance let out a harsh, forced laugh to cover his momentary hesitation. He looked around at the watching crowd, realizing that backing down now would destroy his reputation of absolute authority. He grabbed Sarah’s shoulder, trying to forcefully drag her out of the queue. The sudden movement knocked her plastic tray from her hands, sending it clattering to the floor, food spilling across the clean tiles.

"MPs! Over here!"

Vance shouted, waving down two military police officers who were stationed near the entrance. Sergeant Miller and his partner rushed over, their hands resting cautiously near their utility belts. Vance pointed a finger at Sarah, his chest heaving with anger.

"We have an unauthorized civilian trespassing in the active-duty line and refusing to comply with direct orders. Detain her and escort her to the gate immediately,"

Vance commanded. Sarah looked at Sergeant Miller, ignoring Vance entirely. She reached slowly into her front hoodie pocket to retrieve her federal credentials.

"I suggest you ask for my credentials before you touch me,"

she said calmly. But Vance was too far gone in his rage. He lunged forward and slapped her hand away, sending her leather-bound ID badge sliding across the linoleum floor, face down.

"She is reaching for something! Restrain her!"

Vance ordered. As Miller hesitated, caught between the Captain's orders and Sarah's calm demeanor, Sarah looked directly at Vance and spoke in a clear, carrying voice.

"Captain Vance, I know all about the off-the-books warehouse in Sector Four. I know about the missing tactical gear, and I know exactly which dummy corporation you have been routing the payments to."

The words hit Vance like a physical blow. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking sickly pale. He opened his mouth, but only a desperate, choked sound came out as he realized his multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme had just been exposed in front of his entire unit.
