Previously: When a power-tripping military officer tried to drag a quiet woman out of the base mess hall, he had no idea who she actually was—or how quickly his career would crumble.

The Fragile Ego of Authority

But the momentary hesitation in Derek's eyes was quickly swallowed by his fragile ego. He couldn't let a civilian woman in a green hoodie embarrass him in front of the entire battalion. He tightened his grip on her arm, his knuckles turning white as he sneered.

"I don't care who you think you are," Derek hissed, his voice dripping with arrogance. "You're trespassing on my base, and I'm putting an end to this right now."

He turned his head and shouted toward the entrance of the mess hall, where two heavily armed military police officers were stationed.

"MPs! We have an unauthorized civilian resisting orders in the mess hall! Get over here and escort her out!"

The MPs immediately began marching down the center aisle, their heavy combat boots echoing loudly on the polished concrete floor. The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. Several soldiers at the nearby tables stood up, sensing that the situation was spiraling out of control. Rachel remained perfectly still, her posture straight and her face an unreadable mask of calm.

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors at the back of the mess hall swung open. A group of high-ranking officers walked in, led by the base commander himself, General Harrison. Derek, still holding Rachel's arm, smiled triumphantly as the general approached the commotion.

"Sir!" Derek announced, standing at a rigid, one-handed salute while keeping his grip on Rachel. "I caught this civilian trying to bypass protocol. She refused to leave, so I am having her removed."

General Harrison stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes darted from Derek's smug face, down to the hand gripping Rachel's sleeve, and finally to Rachel herself. In an instant, all the color drained from the general's face. He looked as if he had just seen a ghost.

"Let go of her," the general whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of shock and sheer terror.

Derek blinked, confused. "Sir?" he asked, his grip loosening slightly but not releasing.

"I said, let go of her right now, Captain!" Harrison roared, his voice shaking the light fixtures.
