A Rising Tension

Instead of reacting to the insult, Claire simply watched him. She noted the arrogance in his posture, the absolute certainty in his eyes that he was superior. Jack turned away with a triumphant smirk, high-fiving one of his buddies as he walked down to the front podium. He assumed he had successfully put a low-level staffer in her place.

Standing at the podium, Jack began addressing the room, eagerly discussing the rumor of their incoming commanding officer. "I heard the new boss is a decorated combat veteran," Jack boasted, leaning over the wooden stand. "A real warrior who is going to clean house and get rid of the dead weight around here." He cast another mocking glance back toward Claire, clearly implying she was part of that dead weight.

Claire slowly stood up from her seat in the back row. The hum of conversation died down instantly as she began walking down the sloped aisle. Her steps were measured, confident, and carried an undeniable authority that made several pilots turn their heads in curiosity.

Jack watched her approach, his hands resting arrogantly on his hips. "I thought I told you to go get the coffee, sweetie," he muttered, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper as she reached the front of the room. "The exit is behind you."

Before Claire could reply, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium swung open. Colonel Sterling, the base commander, walked into the room with a crisp, commanding stride. Instantly, a voice barked out, "Attention on deck!"

Every single officer in the room snapped to attention, their backs straight and eyes locked forward. Jack stood perfectly rigid, saluting proudly. Colonel Sterling walked down the aisle and stopped directly next to Claire. Seeing an opportunity to show initiative, Jack spoke up immediately.

"Colonel, sir, we have a civilian intruder in the briefing room who is refusing to leave and disrupting our mission preparation."
