An Arrogant Soldier Mocked a Weathered Old Man, Until One Shot Revealed His True Identity
Previously: When a smug young sniper mocked a 68-year-old veteran at a desert training ground, he had no idea he was challenging a legendary ghost unit warrior.
Secrets of the Ghost Unit
Before Jax could find his voice, the heavy crunch of boots on gravel announced the arrival of Base Commander Vance. The highly decorated three-star general walked with a rigid posture, his eyes scanning the tense scene. He stopped dead in his tracks, his gaze locking onto the faded wolf tattoo on William’s arm. Slowly, Vance raised his hand to his brow, delivering a crisp, respectful salute to the civilian veteran.
"That is the mark of the ghost unit,"
Vance whispered, his voice carrying a rare tone of absolute reverence. The surrounding soldiers gasped. The Ghost Unit was a legendary, classified black-ops division whose missions were never recorded, and whose members were whispered to be the deadliest warriors the country had ever produced.

Jax, desperate to salvage his shattered pride, stepped forward. "Sir, with all respect, he's just an old man! It was a lucky shot!"
Vance turned on Jax with a fury that made the young soldier flinch. "Silence, Corporal! You are standing in the presence of Sergeant Major William Vance—no relation to me, but a man who saved more lives than your entire platoon ever will. In fact, he is the sole reason your own father survived the extraction in Fallujah twenty years ago!"
William's heart tightened. He looked closely at Jax's defiant eyes and recognized the stubborn jawline of Leo, his former spotter. Leo had gone missing in action during a classified mission shortly after Fallujah, presumed dead by the military. But William had always suspected a cover-up.
"Your father was a good man, Jax,"
William said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. "But he didn't die in action. He was left behind by the high command because he knew too much about a corrupt arms deal."
Jax's eyes widened in horror. The smugness was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, painful realization. The very institution he swore allegiance to had betrayed his family, and the old veteran he had just mocked was the only one who knew the truth.
