The Phantom of the Range

The dusty heat of the Nevada desert hung heavy over the shooting range, the harsh daylight baking the gravel below. Frank walked with a slow, deliberate pace toward the registration counter, his rugged, weathered face showing the lines of a long and difficult life. At sixty-five, with a thick grey beard and a faded khaki canvas jacket, he looked like a relic of a bygone era. To the young men gathered around the benches, he was just an old man who had wandered into the wrong place.

Standing near the counter was Kyle, a twenty-seven-year-old active-duty soldier wearing a pristine black utility vest. Kyle looked at Frank with a smug, mocking smile, sizing up the older man's worn boots and frayed collar. He folded his arms, eager to show off in front of his peers.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"

Kyle's dismissive laugh echoed through the pavilion. Frank didn't flinch. He calmly pulled back his sleeve to retrieve his ID, revealing a striking black wolf tattoo on his forearm. Kyle glanced at the ink and laughed again, shaking his head. But Frank remained stoic. He walked to the firing line, picked up a heavy, scoped rifle, and adjusted his stance with effortless precision.

"I only need one shot,"

Frank said, his voice as calm as a still lake. He squeezed the trigger. A single, deafening crack shattered the desert air. Hundreds of yards away, the bullet tore directly through the dead center of the target. Kyle stared at the digital monitor in absolute disbelief, his jaw dropping. "What? Impossible!" he stammered. A single tear of shock and sudden realization rolled down Kyle's cheek as he stared at the older man. The range master, watching from the booth, whispered in awe: "That is the mark of the ghost unit."
