Previously: When an arrogant young soldier mocks a rugged seventy-two-year-old veteran at a desert shooting range, a single, impossible shot reveals a legendary secret that changes everything.

A Ghost from the Past

The silence at the shooting range was thick and suffocating. Brody stood frozen, staring at the old man he had so foolishly insulted. The legendary Ghost Unit was supposed to be a myth—a black-ops squad that performed impossible missions during the height of the Cold War. To realize he was standing in the presence of one of its survivors was overwhelming.

Before Brody could find his voice to apologize, heavy footsteps echoed on the gravel behind them. Colonel Vance, the commander of the desert training facility, stepped out of the shadow of the main hangar. He was a stern man in his late fifties, his chest decorated with medals, carrying himself with absolute authority. He had heard the commotion and walked over to investigate.

When Vance’s eyes fell upon Arthur, his commanding stride halted abruptly. His face hardened, the color draining from his cheeks, replaced by a dark, simmering anger.

"Arthur?" Vance whispered, his voice laced with venom. "I thought you died in the jungle thirty years ago."

Arthur turned slowly to face the Colonel. The air between them grew instantly cold. Vance was not just any officer; he was the man who had betrayed the Ghost Unit. Decades ago, Vance had ordered a tactical retreat, intentionally leaving Arthur’s squad behind to be captured, all to cover up his own strategic blunder and secure his promotion to the high ranks.

Vance stepped closer, his eyes narrowing as he glared at Arthur’s wolf tattoo. "You shouldn't have come here, Arthur," Vance hissed, leaning in so the other soldiers couldn't hear. "You’re a ghost. If the Pentagon finds out you're alive, they’ll reopen the files. I won't let you ruin my career now."

Vance pulled a secure tablet from his belt, tapping the screen rapidly. He looked up with a wicked grin. "One word from me, and your military pension is flagged. Your family’s medical benefits? Gone. I will erase you completely, just like I should have done thirty years ago."
