Previously: When a smug young soldier mocks a seventy-two-year-old veteran at a desert shooting range, a single shot and a hidden forearm tattoo change everything, revealing a legendary secret.

The Weight of the Ghost

The silence at the shooting range was thick enough to cut with a knife. Derek stood frozen, his arrogant demeanor completely shattered. The other recruits who had been snickering moments ago now stood at attention, their eyes darting between George and the digital target monitor. The legend of the Ghost Unit was taught in hushed whispers during basic training—they were the elite of the elite, shadows who operated where others feared to tread.

Before Derek could find his voice to apologize, heavy footsteps approached from the command tent. Colonel Vance, the base commander, stepped out onto the gravel. His sharp eyes immediately took in the scene: the perfect bullseye on the monitor, Derek’s pale, tear-streaked face, and the stoic old man holding a vintage rifle.

"What is the meaning of this commotion?" Colonel Vance demanded, his voice booming across the range.

Derek opened his mouth, but no sound came out. He knew that disrespecting a retired officer, let alone a highly decorated member of a legendary classified unit, was a career-ending offense. If George spoke a single word of complaint, Derek would be stripped of his rank and discharged before sunset.

Colonel Vance walked closer, his eyes falling upon the faded black wolf tattoo on George’s arm. The Colonel’s eyes widened slightly, and he immediately snapped a crisp, respectful salute. George returned it with a simple nod of his head.

"Sir, is there a problem here with one of my men?" Colonel Vance asked, glaring coldly at Derek.

Derek looked at George, his eyes wide with silent pleading. The young, smug soldier was completely at the old man's mercy. George looked at the young man, seeing past the arrogance to the fear underneath. He remembered being young, hot-headed, and foolish himself, decades ago in a different desert.
