The Ghost of the Desert

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty expanse of the Nevada desert shooting range, baking the cracked earth until the air shimmered with heat. It was the kind of harsh, unforgiving daylight that exposed every flaw, but seventy-year-old Charles didn't seem to mind. Wearing a weathered brown military-style jacket that had seen better decades, his grey stubble stark against his tanned, leathered skin, he walked with a slow, deliberate pace toward the registration desk. His presence was quiet, almost invisible, until he crossed paths with the active-duty soldiers gathered near the firing line.

Among them was Marcus, a twenty-nine-year-old soldier clad in a pristine, charcoal tactical outfit. Marcus oozed the effortless arrogance of youth and modern training. Seeing the old man approach with an outdated rifle case, Marcus smirked, nudging his comrades.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?"
Marcus asked, his voice dripping with mockery. The younger soldiers laughed dismissively, folding their arms as they waited for the old veteran to turn back in shame.

Charles didn't flinch. Without a word, he reached down to adjust the strap of his rifle case. As his sleeve pulled back, it revealed a faded but striking black wolf tattoo etched into his forearm. Marcus glanced at it, scoffing, completely unaware of the weight that symbol carried. Charles calmly lifted his scoped rifle, bypassing the standard targets and aiming at a steel plate placed over a thousand yards away—a distance deemed nearly impossible in the howling desert crosswinds.

He took a single, slow breath, aligning his sight with the target. He didn't hesitate. He squeezed the trigger once. The deafening crack of the rifle echoed off the canyon walls, followed a split second later by the unmistakable, high-pitched metallic clang of a direct hit. Charles lowered the weapon, his stoic face remaining entirely unchanged.

"I only need one shot,"
he murmured. Marcus froze, his jaw dropping as he stared through his binoculars in utter disbelief.
"What? Impossible!"
he stammered, a single tear of humiliation and sudden, creeping dread rolling down his cheek beneath his black military cap.
