The gilded Champagne Rotunda of the Monte Carlo Philanthropy Ball glittered like a dream spun from amber and gold. Crystal chandeliers cast warm rivers of light across black-and-gold veined marble floors, while velvet ropes held back a sea of tuxedos and silk gowns. I stood close to Grandpa Lorenzo Moretti, my hand lost in his, the polished leather of my miniature Oxford shoes squeaking softly against the marble.

Grandpa always said I was his shadow, his little lion. At six, I wasn't sure what that meant, but I knew he was the strongest man in the room. His silver hair gleamed under the lights, and his black wool overcoat draped over his three-piece tuxedo made him look like a statue carved from ancient Rome.

But Miranda, my step-grandmother, hated that. She hated how Grandpa looked at me, how he called me his heir. She stood beside her son Julian, her platinum blonde chignon so tight it pulled her skin, her black velvet gown stretched over a belly that was supposed to hold my new uncle or cousin.

"Leo," she cooed, but her eyes were sharp as broken glass. "Come here, sweetheart. Let everyone see the little charity case Grandpa drags around."

I didn't move. Grandpa's hand tightened on mine.

"He's not a charity case," Grandpa said, his voice low and calm. "He's my grandson."

Miranda laughed, a shrill sound that cut through the string quartet. "Oh, Lorenzo, don't be naive. This gala is for the future of the Moretti dynasty — the baby in my belly. Not this… this orphan you picked up from some gutter."

The words stung like a slap. I felt tears prick my eyes, but I forced them back. Grandpa had taught me to be strong, to never let them see me cry. I pressed my cheek against his leg, breathing in the scent of his cologne and old leather.

"Move out of the spotlight, you worthless little brat!"

Miranda's diamond-encrusted clutch swung toward me, striking my hand with a sharp crack. I gasped, pulling back. The pain was nothing compared to the humiliation burning in my chest. The whole room was watching now, whispers rippling through the crowd like wind through wheat.

Grandpa's face went stone. But before he could speak, I saw something that made my heart skip.

I tugged his sleeve and pointed a trembling finger at Miranda's rounded belly. "Grandpa… her baby tummy is made of yellow sponge! Look, the black Velcro strap is hanging out the back of her dress!"

My whisper was innocent, just a child stating what I saw. But the effect was immediate. Miranda's arrogant smirk froze, her face draining to sheet-white panic. She clutched her stomach as if she could hide the truth, but the damage was done.

Grandpa's eyes narrowed. He stepped forward, his footsteps echoing like thunder on the marble. Miranda backed away, her heel catching on the hem of her gown. Julian stood frozen, sweat beading on his brow.

"Lorenzo, don't be absurd," Miranda stammered. "The boy is just jealous—"

But Grandpa was already behind her. He grabbed the loose black Velcro strap that dangled beneath the back hem of her dress and yanked.

The hollow beige polyurethane-foam belly cushion dropped to the floor with a soft thud.

Silence. Absolute silence. The chandeliers seemed to dim, as if the universe itself was holding its breath.

Grandpa picked up the fake bump, holding it under the light. His voice roared across the rotunda, a gravelly, thunderous baritone that bounced off the marble walls. "You thought a Velcro foam cushion would fool me while you treated my flesh and blood like dirt?!"

Miranda's hands flew to her flattened gown, her face a mask of terror. Julian's mouth hung open. I stared, my eyes wide, my heart pounding.

Then Vance, the security chief, lunged forward. "Don't come any closer, boss," he barked. "I'm paid to keep your hands off her!"

But Grandpa intercepted Vance's wrist in mid-air, twisting it with brutal precision, then drove a devastating forearm strike into his chest. Vance hit the carpet with a heavy thump, groaning.

Grandpa let go of him, turned, and hurled the foam belly onto the crystal table. It spun, landing with a clatter among the champagne flutes. He wrapped his arm around my shoulders, pulling me close.

"You traded your own blood for a silicone hoax," he said, his voice booming, lethal. "You are disowned effective immediately. And Leo — Leo is sole heir to the entire Moretti dynasty."

Miranda and Julian collapsed to their knees, their world crumbling. I leaned into Grandpa's chest, feeling his heartbeat, safe and strong.

But as the crowd erupted in gasps and applause, I saw Miranda's eyes flick to the side, toward a shadowed doorway. And I knew — this wasn't over.
