They Banished Me From the Family Gala, So I Returned as Their Superior Officer
Previously: When Sarah’s wealthy stepfather banished her from the family circle for choosing a military life, he thought she was ruined. Years later, she made an uninvited entrance that shattered his pride.
The Price of Pride
The moment the official ceremony paused for intermission, the ballroom erupted into a frenzy of whispers. Richard did not waste a second. Pushing past local politicians and military dignitaries, he stormed toward the edge of the stage, his face contorted with a mixture of rage and desperation. Eleanor followed closely behind, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. They cornered Sarah near the navy blue drapes, away from the immediate glare of the cameras.
"What is the meaning of this charade, Sarah?" Richard hissed, his voice trembling. "You think because you put on a fancy suit you can humiliate me in public? You don't belong here. This is my event!"
Sarah looked down at her stepfather, her expression cool and unbothered. The girl who used to tremble at his shouting was long gone, replaced by a woman who had commanded troops in high-stress operations. She did not raise her voice, which only made her presence more intimidating.

"I don't need your permission to be here, Richard," Sarah replied calmly. "In fact, as the keynote speaker, I was invited by the Joint Chiefs. If anyone doesn't belong here, it’s someone who uses charity events to launder their reputation."
Eleanor sneered, stepping forward. "You're still just the ungrateful stray my father took in. You think a title changes that? One call to our friends in Washington and we can have your little career investigated."
Richard nodded, regaining some of his arrogant composure. "She's right. I know the senator on the defense committee. I can make things very difficult for you, Major General. Leave now, or I will ruin you."
But Sarah merely smiled. She reached into her formal jacket and pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive, holding it between two fingers.
"You should worry less about my career, Richard, and more about your own," Sarah whispered. "This drive contains the complete audit of your real estate firm's offshore accounts—the ones you used to fund this very gala. The federal investigators are already in the lobby."
