Previously: After a grueling battle with cancer, Amanda finally received the news she was completely cured. But when she returned home to celebrate, she discovered a heartbreaking truth about her husband's secret plans.

Amanda took an Uber home, her heart hammering against her ribs. The house she shared with David in the quiet suburbs of Seattle was unusually silent when she unlocked the front door. Her bags felt heavy in her hands, but her steps were light as she crept inside, hoping to surprise him.

As she approached the hallway, she heard muffled voices drifting from David’s home office. The door was slightly ajar.

"Are you absolutely sure about the diagnosis, David? There’s no mistake?"

It was Eleanor, her mother-in-law. Her tone was sharp, lacking any trace of the warmth she usually put on for family gatherings.

"Yes, Mom, I'm sure," David’s voice replied, heavy with frustration. "Amanda called me herself. The oncology report is clear. She's in complete remission. The cancer is gone."
"Oh, this is a disaster," Eleanor groaned. "What about the business debt? The creditors are threatening to foreclose on the commercial properties next month! We needed that policy payout, David. We were counting on it!"

Amanda froze in the hallway, her breath catching in her throat. She pressed her back against the wall, her hands trembling.

"I know, Mom! Do you think I wanted this?" David snapped. "I forged her signature on that supplementary two-million-dollar policy because the doctors said she had a ten percent chance of surviving the year. I took a gamble to save the company, and now we’re stuck paying astronomical premiums on a policy that will never pay out!"

The betrayal hit Amanda like a physical blow. Her husband hadn't been praying for her survival; he had been betting on her death.

Pushing the door wide open, Amanda confronted them. David’s face drained of color as he scrambled to close a manila folder on his desk. Eleanor gasped, clutching her pearls.

"You wanted me to die," Amanda said, her voice shaking with a mixture of rage and grief.

Instead of apologizing, David’s expression hardened. He stood up, blocking the door.

"You don't understand the pressure I've been under, Amanda," he said coldly. "Give me the folder. We need to handle this quietly."

When Amanda grabbed the documents and tried to run, David lunged forward, grabbing her wrist with terrifying strength.
