Previously: After being wrongfully discharged, elite sniper Emily is called back for an impossible mission. But when she discovers who she must save, her world is shattered.

The Final Calculation

Emily had only one bullet left. The wind was howling at forty knots, and the dust storm made it completely impossible to see the target through normal optics. She lay back down in the dirt, the wind whipping her red hair across her face. David looked at her, his eyes filled with terror. "You have to take the shot, Emily. Please," he whispered.

Emily closed her eyes for a brief second, blocking out the howling wind, the pain of the past, and the fear of failure. She opened them, looking through the scope. She couldn't see the captor's head, but she remembered the exact layout of the roof. She calculated the wind resistance, the bullet drop, and the exact moment of the wind's brief pause.

She squeezed the trigger. The rifle roared one last time.

The bullet traveled through the blinding wall of dust, slicing cleanly through the small antenna of the detonator in the captor's hand and neutralizing him instantly before he could press the button. The rescue team swarmed the roof, securing Vance and saving everyone. The mission was a complete success.

As the rescue helicopters arrived, David stood beside Emily, his shoulder bandaged. He offered her a chance to return to the elite unit, her name fully cleared. But Emily simply shook her head and smiled. She had proven her worth, not to the military, but to herself. True redemption isn't found in a uniform, but in the strength to forgive and walk away on your own terms.
