The Teacup Shattered Like My Last Hope

The conservatory of the Vance Horizon Hotel was a cathedral of glass and light, but I felt none of its beauty. My name is Hannah Volkov, and at eight months pregnant, I was on my knees — not by choice, but by command.

Bianca Moretti, the heiress with the sculpted waves and a mouth full of venom, had just swept a porcelain teapot off the table. Warm Earl Grey tea pooled at my feet, mixing with shards of bone china that glittered like tiny knives.

"Clean this floor right now!" she snapped, her voice dripping with disdain, pointing at the mess as if I were less than the dirt beneath her heels.

My hands trembled as I pressed them to my belly, feeling the flutter of my unborn child. Beside me, my five-year-old Toby gasped, his chubby cheeks pale with fear.

"Mommy, don't," he whispered, tugging at my apron hem. But I had no choice. This job was all we had — a roof over our heads, food on the table. I couldn't afford to lose it.

"Stop hurting my pregnant mommy!" Toby's voice cracked, louder now, his tears spilling over.

Bianca's eyes narrowed, and she reached out to shove my shoulder. I flinched, shielding my belly with both arms, bracing for the impact that never came.

A hand — strong, commanding, and dressed in an anthracite silk suit — caught her wrist mid-air. The air shifted as a man stepped between us, his chiseled features set in stone.

"Back away from her now," he said, his voice low and dangerous, like the calm before a storm.

Bianca recoiled as if she'd been slapped. "Lorenzo? What are you doing here?"

Lorenzo Volkov — the billionaire banking patriarch, the man whose face graced financial magazines — didn't even look at her. His eyes were on me, softening just a fraction.

Then the Chief Operating Officer stepped forward, holding a glowing platinum tablet. He bowed slightly, presenting it to Bianca.

"Her name is on deed," he said, his voice flat.

Bianca's face drained of every ounce of color. "What? That's impossible. She's just a waitress."

Lorenzo ignored her, shrugging off his bespoke jacket and draping it over my shoulders. The warmth of the fabric was a shock, and so was the scent of him — sandalwood and something darker, more primal.

He lifted Toby into his other arm, and my son clung to him like a lifeline.

"Security, throw them out now," Lorenzo ordered, and four guards materialized to escort the disgraced heiress toward the exit.

Bianca's protests faded as she was dragged away, but I couldn't hear them. All I could hear was the thundering of my own heart.

"Who are you?" I whispered, my voice barely a breath.

Lorenzo's gaze met mine, and something flickered in his eyes — recognition, pain, and a secret too heavy to speak.

"We need to talk," he said. "About who you really are."

And in that moment, I knew my life was about to change forever.
