His name was Julian Vance, a notorious local businessman known for breeding aggressive guard dogs for high-paying clients.

"Ah, Mark. I see you’ve got the beast secured," Julian said, his smile devoid of warmth. "I’m here to collect my property."

Leo stood up, Maya immediately rising to her feet beside him, her low growl returning as she sensed the tension.

"Property? What is he talking about, Dad?"

Mark looked down at the dirt, unable to meet his son’s eyes.

"I had no choice, Leo. The ranch is failing. The bank was going to foreclose. Julian offered me a way out. He wanted a dog with an aggressive reputation... and I signed her over to him."
