Previously: When my corrupt boss set fire to the only proof of his multi-million dollar fraud, he thought he was safe. He had no idea we were one step ahead.

The Smoke and the Mirror

As the ashes drifted onto the polished rosewood, Henry let out a triumphant, manic laugh. He threw the charred remains onto the table, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. He believed that by destroying the physical document, he had erased his crimes forever. The evidence was gone, reduced to black dust between his fingers.

"It is your word against mine now," Henry sneered, leaning over the table, his dark suit smelling of smoke. "Who do you think the board will believe? A group of low-level employees, or the man who built this firm?"

Lisa was visibly shaking, and John looked down at the table in defeat. But I refused to let him win. I took a deep, steadying breath and looked Henry directly in the eyes. I had anticipated his desperation. I knew a man like Henry would rather burn the world down than face justice.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone, placing it gently on the table. With a soft tap, a crystal-clear recording began to play. It was Henry’s voice from just ten minutes prior, admitting to the exact ledger discrepancies and threatening to ruin our lives if we spoke out. Henry’s triumphant smile instantly vanished, replaced by a cold, pale dread.

But I wasn't finished. I pointed to the small, inconspicuous smoke detector in the corner of the ceiling. Hidden inside it was a high-definition security camera. "We didn't just bring a paper document, Henry," I whispered, my voice steady. "Every second of this meeting, including your little bonfire, has been live-streamed directly to the board of directors and our legal team."

Realizing his career and freedom were evaporating, Henry lost all control. He lunged across the table, his hands reaching for my throat in a desperate bid to grab my phone.
