Previously: For months, Officer William searched Dorothy's heavy grain sack at the border. He never found anything, until he finally realized he was looking at the wrong thing entirely.

The Obsession and the Breakthrough

As the weeks turned into months, William became consumed by suspicion. His fellow officers laughed at him, teasing him about his daily "grain inspections." They insisted Dorothy was just a harmless widow, but William’s instincts screamed otherwise. Why would an elderly woman expend so much physical effort to transport cheap grain across a border daily? There had to be a hidden motive.

One tense evening, determined to find the truth, William decided to escalate the inspection. When Dorothy arrived, he stopped her with an unyielding look. "Step aside, please," he commanded. He dragged a heavy metal examination table out of the guardhouse and hoisted the massive burlap sack onto it.

With a swift motion, he sliced the bag open, dumping hundreds of pounds of golden grain across the table. He sifted through every handful, scanned it with a metal detector, and even tested samples for illicit chemical coatings. Dorothy stood by, tears silently streaming down her face as she watched her hard work scattered. Yet, the results were undeniable: it was just grain.

Feeling a deep wave of guilt, William helped her gather what he could. "I'm sorry, Dorothy," he muttered. But as she loaded the bag back onto her bicycle and pushed it away, a sudden realization struck him like a bolt of lightning. He stared at the classic bicycle. It was a vintage green cruiser.

Yesterday, she had been riding a black vintage roadster. The week before, a red step-through frame. William gasped as the truth hit him. He had been so focused on the decoy sack that he had completely ignored the vehicle itself. Dorothy wasn't smuggling grain at all. She was smuggling the bicycles.

Determined to confirm his theory, William waited until his shift ended, hopped into his patrol car, and quietly followed her tire tracks down the dirt road, leading him straight to an old, weathered barn.
