Before Marcus could demand an explanation, the boy—whose name was Leo—gasped and looked toward the end of the long hallway. Two imposing men in dark, tailored suits had just exited the ballroom. Their eyes were locked onto Leo, and their posture was predatory. "They found us," Leo whispered in terror. "We have to go, Marcus!" Without hesitation, Marcus grabbed Leo’s hand and led him through a side exit, slipping out into the cool night air just before the men reached them. They scrambled into Marcus’s SUV and sped away into the dark city streets.

Once they were safe on the highway, Marcus pulled over to a secluded overlook. His hands were still shaking on the steering wheel. He turned to the young boy, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Leo, you need to tell me everything. My father died five years ago. How can he be alive?" Marcus demanded, desperate for the truth.

Leo wiped a smudge of dirt from his forehead and looked at Marcus with eyes far too old for a seven-year-old.

"He didn't die in the landslide," Leo explained softly. "The landslide was caused by an illegal mining operation owned by a powerful corporation called Vanguard Crest. Your dad found their secret facility while saving my family. To protect their secrets, they staged his death and kept him captive in an underground bunker in the timber valley."

Marcus listened in utter horror as the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. "But why now? Why send you?" Marcus asked, his voice cracking. Leo explained that Scott had helped him escape through a ventilation shaft just two days ago, giving him the watch's description and telling him to find Marcus at the memorial gala. But the realization of the danger they were in hit Marcus instantly. As he looked in his rearview mirror, headlights suddenly flashed behind them. The black SUV of their pursuers was closing in fast.
