A Critical Rescue

The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the concrete of downtown Chicago, turning the parked cars into literal ovens. Clara, a twenty-eight-year-old marketing coordinator, was rushing back to her office after a quick lunch break. Her mind was occupied with upcoming deadlines until a faint, desperate sound arrested her attention. It was a muffled, raspy whimper, coming from a parked black sedan.

Clara approached the vehicle and pressed her face against the tinted glass of the rear window. Her heart stopped. Inside, strapped tightly into a heavy car seat, was an infant. The baby’s face was flushed a deep, alarming crimson, and sweat soaked his tiny cotton outfit. He was crying, but no sound was coming out—he was suffocating in the stagnant, boiling air.

Panic seized Clara, but she knew she had only seconds. "Is anyone's car this is?" she screamed to the busy sidewalk, but the passing crowds barely glanced her way. Realizing she was on her own, Clara spotted a heavy, jagged rock near a concrete planter. She grabbed it, raised it above her head, and shattered the front passenger window with a resounding crash.

Ignoring the glass shards, Clara unlocked the door, scrambled into the backseat, and pulled the limp baby into her arms. She cradled him close, letting the vehicle's hot air escape as she rocked him.

"It's okay. You're safe now,"
she whispered, her own tears falling on his damp forehead.

Suddenly, a shrill voice cut through the air.

"What did you do to my car?"
Emily, a brown-haired woman in a bright yellow blouse, rushed over, dropping her shopping bags. Clara looked up, her eyes blazing with fury.
"Your baby was locked inside,"
she countered. Emily froze, her defensive instincts kicking in.
"I was only gone a minute!"
she wept. Clara glared back with intense emotion.
"He couldn't breathe."
Emily collapsed in tears, reaching for her child as he weakly whimpered,
"Mama..."
