The Ghost on the Train

The Lexington Avenue line was unusually crowded for a Tuesday night. Leo sat hunched on the cold blue bench of the subway car, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his dark blue zip-up hoodie. He was only twenty, but the physical exhaustion of working double shifts at the warehouse made him feel twice his age. His mind drifted, as it always did when he was tired, to the memory of his older brother, Marcus. Five years had passed since the tragic warehouse fire that had claimed Marcus's life, leaving Leo and his mother to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives.

The overhead fluorescent lights flickered, casting long, eerie shadows across the train car. A sudden, inexplicable chill swept over Leo, making the hairs on his arms stand up. Slowly, almost magnetically, he snapped his head up. His wide, startled eyes scanned the car, passing over the tired faces of commuters before locking onto a figure sitting directly across from him.

But the ghost looked back, and his eyes were filled with pure terror. Instead of reaching out, Marcus slowly raised a single finger to his lips, giving Leo a subtle, frantic shake of his head. He was warning him to stay silent.
