Previously: Training in a gritty basement gym, two former soldiers push their physical limits until a long-buried military secret explodes, changing their lives and their brotherhood forever.

The Weight of the Truth

Mark took three slow, deliberate steps across the gym floor. His chest heaved, and his hands trembled with adrenaline. The silence in the room was heavier than any weight they had lifted. Finally, the anger that had consumed Mark for five years boiled over.

He grabbed the collar of Liam's green t-shirt, his knuckles brushing against the cold metal of Liam's dog tags. Liam didn't flinch. He stood his ground, his chest rising and falling as he looked directly into the older man's eyes.

"Why did you run, Liam?" Mark hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and grief. "You were his sergeant. You were his best friend. Why are you standing here sweating in a gym, and my brother is in a box?"

Liam closed his eyes for a brief moment, letting out a long, shuddering breath. When he opened them, there was no fear—only a deep, crushing sorrow that seemed to age him by decades.

"I didn't run, Mark," Liam said softly, his voice cracking. "I stayed. I stayed until there was nothing left to do."
"Liar!" Mark roared, shoving Liam backward.

Liam stumbled against the heavy barbell rack, the iron plates clanging loudly in the enclosed space. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and slowly reached into his faded gym bag. From the bottom of the bag, he pulled out a small, tattered green notebook, its cover stained with grease and dark, dried blood. Mark’s breath caught in his throat. He recognized his brother's handwriting on the cover immediately.

Liam opened the journal to the last page. "Tyler gave this to me before they loaded him onto the medical chopper," Liam explained quietly. "He begged me to hide it. He didn't want you to know what really happened on that ridge."
