The Ultimate Sacrifice

Mark didn't look up from his work, his focus entirely consumed by the arterial bleed. "Robert, I need you focused! Hold the clamp!" he barked. But Robert was paralyzed, staring down at the pale face of the woman he had spent the last ten years searching for. It was Sarah, his younger sister. She had run away from home at seventeen to escape their abusive father, vanishing into the wind. Robert had joined the military hoping the distraction would dull his guilt, never imagining she would enlist under their mother's maiden name, Vance.

"Mark, she’s my sister," Robert whispered, his voice trembling. "She's my little sister."

The medic paused for a fraction of a second, his eyes widening behind his protective goggles, before shaking his head. "We don't have time for a family reunion, Robert! Her pressure is bottoming out. She has O-negative blood, and our field supply is completely dry. If we don't get blood into her in the next two minutes, she’s gone."

Without hesitation, Robert ripped off his tactical vest and tore open his sleeve. "Take mine," he commanded. "We’re the same blood type. Do a direct transfusion. Now!" Mark protested, warning him of the immense danger of an unmonitored field transfusion, especially as mortar shells began to detonate closer to their position, shaking the very ground beneath them. But Robert wouldn't back down. He grabbed the line himself, forcing the medic to act.

As the plastic tubing connected their veins, Robert felt the cold pull of his own life force leaving his body, flowing directly into his sister. With the outpost collapsing around them and alarms blaring, Robert leaned close to Sarah’s ear, squeezing her hand. "I’m not letting you go this time, Sarah," he sobbed. "I’ve got you."

he sobbed. "I’ve got you."
