General Wright’s expression hardened into granite. He did not demand immediate answers in front of the assembled ranks. Instead, with a sharp gesture, he ordered Heather and Captain Vance to follow him to the secure briefing room at the end of the corridor. Once inside, the General locked the heavy oak door, shutting out the rest of the base. The atmosphere was suffocatingly tense as Vance immediately stepped forward, his voice dripping with false concern.

Vance lied smoothly, his eyes darting to Heather with a silent, threatening glare.

"She has been disoriented and is clearly not in her right mind."

"This is the night training exercise Captain Vance is referring to, sir," she said, her voice unwavering. Vance lunged forward to grab the drive, but General Wright was faster. He snatched the USB, plugged it into his secure laptop, and began scrolling through the massive data dumps, digital signatures, and matching serial numbers. The evidence was irrefutable. Wright’s face grew flushed with anger as he realized the depth of the betrayal within his own ranks.

Just as the General picked up the secure telephone to alert the Military Police, the overhead lights flickered and died. The entire building was plunged into pitch darkness.
