Previously: When prison bully Brenda cornered Clara and demanded her sneakers, it wasn't a random act of cruelty. Hidden inside those soles was the key to a dark conspiracy—and Clara's ultimate revenge.

Secrets Hidden in the Soles

To anyone else, the old running shoes were worthless garbage, but to Brenda, they represented a threat to her entire criminal empire inside these walls. Six months ago, my sister Lily had died in this prison under suspicious circumstances. The official report claimed an overdose, but Lily had never touched drugs. In her final letter to me, she had dropped a hint about a hidden micro-SD card containing evidence of a massive smuggling ring run by Brenda and a corrupt guard named Officer Miller.

I had deliberately committed a minor offense to get sent to this exact facility, determined to find that evidence and clear my sister's name. It had taken weeks of bribing orderlies to retrieve Lily's personal effects, but I had finally secured the shoes. Beneath the left sole, I had felt the unmistakable hard plastic of the tiny memory card.

But Brenda was smart. She had realized who I was, and she knew the clock was ticking. After our confrontation in the yard, she didn't wait long to make her move. That very evening, Officer Miller ordered me to the basement laundry room for an unscheduled cleaning shift.

As soon as I stepped inside, the heavy steel door slammed shut behind me. I heard the lock click from the outside. The laundry room was dimly lit, filled with the hum of industrial dryers and the smell of bleach. Standing in the shadows was Brenda, flanked by two of her loyal enforcers.

She stepped forward, a wicked, makeshift shiv gleaming in her hand. Her eyes danced with a cruel satisfaction as she cornered me against a row of metal washing machines.

"You thought you could come in here and play detective, Clara?" Brenda sneered, raising the blade. "Your sister was weak, and you're no different. Give me the shoes, or I'll take them off your corpse."
