Previously: When Sergeant Jason Miller targeted a seemingly defenseless woman in the base dining hall to show off his power, he had no idea she was the newly appointed investigator who held his fate.

The Commander's Office

Jason laughed, a harsh, mocking sound that echoed off the concrete walls. He waved over two military police officers who were patrolling the perimeter.

"Arrest this civilian for trespassing and assaulting an officer," Jason ordered, his chest puffed out with unearned pride.

The MPs, eager to please the volatile sergeant, quickly grabbed Lauren's arms. Lauren did not resist. She allowed them to escort her out of the dining hall, keeping her eyes fixed forward. Jason followed close behind, whispering threats of federal prison and ruined lives into her ear. He believed he was completely untouchable.

They marched down the sterile, white corridors of the administration building, finally stopping outside the double doors of the Base Commander's office. Jason pushed the doors open, eager to present his "catch" to Colonel Hendricks.

"Sir, we caught an intruder in the dining hall," Jason announced proudly, standing at attention. "She was harassing the recruits and resisting arrest."

Colonel Hendricks looked up from his desk. His eyes scanned the room, landing on Lauren. In an instant, the color drained from the Colonel's face. He stood up so quickly his heavy leather chair scraped violently against the floor. Ignoring Jason entirely, the Colonel snapped into a crisp, rigid salute.

"Director Vance," Colonel Hendricks said, his voice laced with sudden panic. "We didn't expect your inspection until tomorrow morning."

Jason's smug expression shattered. He stared at his commander, then at the woman in the grey shirt, his mouth hanging open.

"Director? Sir, she's just a civilian..." Jason stammered.

Lauren slowly reached into her pocket and pulled out her official badge, placing it firmly on the desk.

"I am the lead investigator from the Inspector General’s office, Sergeant," Lauren said, her voice dripping with ice. "And you just assaulted a federal official."
