Previously: When a multi-million dollar contract literally bursts into flames during a tense boardroom meeting, Ellen realizes her boss will stop at nothing to hide the truth.

The Final Protocol

As the guards began to pull Ellen toward the heavy glass doors of the boardroom, she stopped resisting. Instead, she looked directly at Susan, who was trembling in her seat. "Susan," Ellen said, her voice ringing clear and calm. "Do you remember the compliance protocol we established last year? The physical backup drive in the vault?"

Richard laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. "The vault is off-limits to everyone except executive officers. You can't reach it."

"I can't," Ellen agreed, a small smile appearing on her face. "But James can. And so can Susan. In fact, Susan is the legal custodian of the off-site physical archives. By law, any attempt to restrict her access during an active audit is a federal offense."

Richard's smile vanished. He turned his gaze to Susan, his eyes narrowing. "Susan, don't you dare."

For five years, Susan had been the quiet follower, always keeping her head down to protect her job. But seeing the burning contract, and seeing Ellen’s courage, something in Susan broke. She stood up, her posture straight and resolute. "James," Susan said, her voice no longer shaking. "Accompany me to the vault. We are going to secure the physical drive and deliver it directly to the federal investigators."

James stood up immediately, adjusting his glasses with a newfound sense of purpose. Richard lunged forward, but the gravity of the situation had shifted. The security guards, realizing that protecting Richard now meant complicity in a federal crime, slowly let go of Ellen's arms and stepped back.

Within hours, the physical backup drive was safely in the hands of the authorities. Richard was arrested at his home later that evening, his career and reputation reduced to ashes just like the contract he had burned. Ellen was appointed as the interim CEO to rebuild Vanguard Holdings from the ground up, with Susan and James by her side.

Sometimes, the very fire meant to destroy the truth only serves to illuminate the path toward justice.
