Previously: When a multi-million dollar contract literally bursts into flames during a tense boardroom meeting, Ellen realizes her boss will stop at nothing to hide the truth.

The Digital Trap

Ellen stared at the pile of black ash on the polished walnut table, her heart hammering against her ribs. She looked at Susan and James, seeking allies, but they both averted their gaze. Richard’s power was absolute, and fear was a potent silencer. Richard leaned back in his leather chair, brushing a speck of ash from his navy suit sleeve with chilling nonchalance.

"You are out of your depth, Ellen," Richard said, his voice smooth and dangerous. "Security is on their way. You will be escorted from the premises, and by tomorrow morning, the board will receive a report detailing your immediate termination for gross misconduct."

Ellen forced herself to breathe. She reached into her bag and pulled out her tablet. "Did you really think I’d bring the only copy into this room, Richard? But as she pressed the screen, the display flashed red. A progress bar appeared, rapidly deleting files. System Override: Access Denied. Ellen’s blood ran cold. She looked up to see Richard smiling, a predatory glint in his eyes.

"Our IT director is a very well-compensated man, Ellen," Richard whispered. "Your access has been revoked, and your backups have been wiped. You have nothing."

Just then, two burly security guards entered the boardroom. They stepped toward Ellen, their presence imposing. James finally spoke up, his voice trembling behind his black-framed glasses. "Richard, this is going too far. We can't just cover this up."

"Sit down, James, unless you want to join her in the unemployment line," Richard snapped. The guards grabbed Ellen’s arms, pulling her back from the table. But as they did, Ellen remembered the one piece of evidence Richard had forgotten to destroy—a secret that went far deeper than stolen money.
