A Ghost from the Past
Edward's hand trembled as he picked up a tasting spoon. He dipped it into the dark reduction and brought it to his lips. The moment the flavors hit his tongue, a wave of emotion washed over him. It was spectacular. It possessed the exact, vibrant soul of the dishes Marcus Vance used to cook before corporate greed diluted the menu. Edward grabbed the young man by the arm and pulled him into his private office, slamming the door behind them.
"Who gave you this recipe?" Edward demanded, his voice shaking. "Only Marcus knew how to balance those flavors."
The young man looked up at the framed photograph of Marcus hanging on the wall, then looked back at Edward with cold, accusing eyes.

"My father did," the boy said. "My name is Dylan Vance. I've watched you turn his legacy into corporate garbage, Edward."
The revelation hit Edward like a physical blow. Dylan was the estranged son Marcus had always hoped would return to the culinary world. Before Edward could apologize or explain, his sous chef burst into the office, her face pale with panic.
"Chef! Pendelton is demanding his main course now!" she cried. "We have to send it!"
Edward looked at the altered plate of scallops. If he sent it out, he was risking his career on an uninvited twenty-year-old's whim. If he threw it away, he would serve a mediocre dish that would surely lose them their star. Taking a deep breath, Edward made his choice. He ordered the dish to be served.
Ten agonizing minutes later, the dining room manager rushed back into the kitchen. Arthur Pendelton wanted to see the chef immediately. Edward walked out to the dining room, his heart hammering against his ribs, with Dylan trailing closely behind in the shadows. The corporate investors sat at an adjacent table, watching eagerly. Pendelton pointed at his completely empty plate.
"Edward," the critic began, his voice echoing in the quiet room, "this is a masterpiece. It has Marcus's soul, but with a brilliant, youthful evolution. Tell me, who created this sauce so I can crown them the city's next star?"
