Previously: When Michelin-starred chef Richard caught a teenager tampering with his signature dish, he was ready to ruin the boy's life—until a taste of the plate revealed a long-buried secret.

The Shadow of the Past

Richard’s face drained of color. The bustling kitchen seemed to fade into a dull hum as he stared at the teenager. The glaze was a masterpiece, but more importantly, it was a ghost from his past. Twenty years ago, Richard had been a struggling apprentice under Arthur Vance, a culinary genius who never received the recognition he deserved. When Arthur passed away, Richard had taken his mentor's private recipe book, using those stolen creations to build his own empire.

"Where did you get this recipe?" Richard whispered, grabbing the boy's arm and pulling him away from the bustling line. "Who are you?"

The boy looked at him with cool, unwavering eyes.

"My name is Tyler Vance," the boy said quietly. "Arthur Vance was my grandfather. And I think you know exactly how I have this recipe."

Panic seized Richard. He quickly ushered Tyler into his private office, locking the door behind them. If the truth came out, his reputation would be destroyed instantly. L'Etoile would close, and his name would be dragged through the mud. He looked at Tyler, who pulled a worn, leather-bound journal from his pocket—the original book of Arthur’s recipes.

"What do you want?" Richard demanded, his voice trembling. "Money? I can write you a check. Just tell me your price."
"I don't want your money, Richard," Tyler replied, tossing the journal onto the desk. "I want justice. My grandfather died in obscurity while you became a millionaire off his genius. Tonight, the top critic in the city is in your dining room. You are going to go out there and tell him the truth about who created this menu, or I will do it myself."

Richard was cornered. The weight of his past sins had finally caught up to him, and the clock was ticking.
