Previously: When a cocky young shooting champion tries to humiliate a 70-year-old woman at the range, she reveals a legendary secret that turns the entire competition upside down.

The Echoes of the Past

Adrian stared at the signature on the paper: Mona Vance. To the young shooters in the room, the name meant nothing. But to Adrian, a veteran of the sport, it was the name of a legend. Mona Vance was a former tactical instructor and Olympic-level shooter who had vanished from the competitive scene forty years ago after a personal tragedy. Her records had stood unchallenged for decades.

Lenny, refusing to let an elderly woman steal his spotlight, marched over to the desk. "This has to be a joke, Adrian," he sneered. "She got lucky. Disqualify her. We don't need senior citizens cluttering the lanes."

"Be quiet, Lenny," Adrian warned, his voice unusually sharp. "You are speaking to the woman who practically wrote the manual for the style of shooting you use today."

Lenny’s face flushed with anger. His fragile ego couldn't handle the revelation. "I don't care who she used to be," he snapped. "That was forty years ago. I challenge her to a sudden-death shootout right now. If she wins, I'll pay her entry fee. If she loses, she packs her bags and leaves."

Mona looked at Lenny’s furious eyes. She didn't want conflict, but she saw the degradation of the sport she loved in his arrogance. "I accept," she replied calmly.

As they prepared their lanes, Lenny’s associate slyly stepped near Mona’s equipment table under the guise of retrieving a towel. When Mona stepped up to her lane and lifted her custom pistol, her highly trained senses immediately picked up on a subtle discrepancy. The weight was uneven. The tension screw in the trigger mechanism had been loosened, and the rear sight was fractionally misaligned. It was a classic, dirty sabotage trick designed to make her shots drift wide to the left.

She looked over at Lenny. He was staring back at her, wearing a smug, confident grin. The clock on the wall began to count down. She had only seconds to decide her next move.
