The Smug Challenger

The air inside the dusty indoor shooting range smelled of gunpowder and old copper. Sixty-eight-year-old Margaret Vance adjusted her green windbreaker, her fingers lightly brushing the worn leather of her gear bag. She had spent decades avoiding places like this, burying a past that had once defined her entire life. But today, she had a reason to stand in the firing lane once more.

Beside her, a young man was loudly boasting to a group of onlookers. It was Luke Carter, a twenty-three-year-old local champion wearing a pristine blue shooting vest. He exuded the kind of unearned arrogance that Margaret had seen a thousand times before. When Luke noticed the silver-haired woman setting up in the adjacent lane, a smug grin spread across his face.

"This is not a retirement club, ma'am," Luke said, loud enough for the entire room to hear. "The senior center is three blocks down."

A few of his friends chuckled, but Margaret didn't flinch. She remained perfectly calm, sliding her ID card into the electronic slot at her station. With a steady, practiced motion, she drew her pistol from its case. The weapon felt like an extension of her own arm, a familiar weight that instantly washed away the decades of exile.

Before Luke could utter another snide remark, Margaret raised the firearm. In a blur of motion, she pulled the trigger. Bang! Bang! Bang! The rapid-fire shots echoed off the concrete walls, deafeningly fast and perfectly controlled. She lowered the weapon, her breathing steady, and finally turned her head to look at the stunned young man.

"I came here to compete," Margaret said quietly.

The target mechanism whirred, bringing the paper sheet back to the station. Luke’s jaw dropped. A single, ragged hole sat dead center in the bullseye. Behind the counter, Albert, a sixty-two-year-old official, picked up Margaret’s registration form to log her entry. As his eyes scanned the signature, his face paled, and his hands began to tremble.

"Wait," Albert whispered, lowering his glasses in absolute shock. "That name..."
