A Cocky Young Champion Mocked a 74-Year-Old Woman—Then She Pulled the Trigger
Previously: When 26-year-old Landon mocked 74-year-old Mildred at the shooting range, he thought she was lost. But when she pulled her pistol, an old official recognized a legendary name.
The Legend Awakens
At the registration desk, Amos, a sixty-nine-year-old official who had seen thousands of shooters pass through the doors, stared at the computerized registration form. He lowered his reading glasses to the tip of his nose, his eyes widening in absolute shock. He looked at the screen, then at Mildred, and then back to the screen.
"Wait,"Amos whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and disbelief.
"That name... Mildred Vance."
Landon stepped forward, his smug grin completely erased.
"What about her name?"he demanded, trying to mask his sudden anxiety with anger.
"She got lucky. Anyone can have a lucky group if they get a good breeze."Amos shook his head slowly, looking at Landon with pity.
"You fool,"Amos said loudly enough for the whole room to hear.
"This is Mildred 'The Falcon' Vance. She was the first woman to win the National Triple Crown in 1978. She set a rapid-fire record that hasn't been touched in forty-four years. She didn't get lucky, Landon. You're standing in the presence of royalty."

Whispers erupted across the shooting range. Landon's face turned a deep, furious crimson. His pride, built on years of easy victories and corporate praise, was suddenly threatened by a woman fifty years his senior.
"I don't care who she used to be!"Landon spat, stepping directly into Mildred's lane.
"That was decades ago. The gear was different, the rules were different. She's ancient history! If she's so great, let's see her prove it today. A head-to-head shootout. Ten targets, rapid fire, moving distance. If she loses, she signs a waiver never to enter this facility again."
Mildred turned her calm, grey eyes toward him.
"And if I win?"she asked. Landon scoffed.
"If you win, I'll personally write a ten-thousand-dollar check to the youth shooting academy you patronize, and I'll apologize to you on my knees in front of everyone here."
