Previously: When Commander James ordered Officer Taylor to remove her uniform jacket in front of the entire unit, he expected a minor infraction. Instead, a hidden tattoo changed everything.

Secrets in the Shadows

Before Taylor could answer, Commander James grabbed her forearm with a grip that was tight but noticeably trembling. He pulled her out of the formation, his voice a low growl as he addressed the stunned troops. "Dismissed," he barked, before leading Taylor toward the concrete command building. The heavy steel door of his private office slammed shut, cutting off the howling wind of the airfield.

James locked the door and turned to face her, the fierce commander replaced by a man who looked like he had just seen a ghost. He paced the room, running a hand through his graying hair before finally stopping in front of her.

"Where did you get that tattoo, Taylor?" he whispered, using her last name with a familiarity that startled her. "That design is unique. Only one man wore it."

Taylor squared her shoulders, refusing to back down. "It belonged to Captain Marcus Taylor," she said, her voice dripping with years of pent-up resentment. "My father. The man you abandoned in the mountains twenty years ago. The man you let the military brand as a traitor."

James flinched as if struck. He let out a bitter, hollow laugh and walked over to a secure wall safe behind his desk.

"You think I betrayed Marcus?" James asked, turning back with a dusty, blood-stained folder in his hands. "Taylor, your father was my best friend. He discovered a massive black-market weapons ring operating right out of this base, run by high-ranking officials. The wolf was our secret signal."

He opened the folder, revealing documents signed by General Sterling, the base commander. "Marcus died protecting this evidence. I've spent twenty years trying to find you to keep you safe, and trying to bring Sterling down from the inside. But by revealing that tattoo on the tarmac today, you've alerted his spies."

Suddenly, the base’s emergency sirens began to blare, a harsh red light flashing across the office walls. Outside, the sound of heavy boots marched rapidly down the hallway. The door handle rattled violently, and a voice demanded entry.
