An Unjust Command

The heat of the Nevada desert was suffocating, rising in shimmering waves off the cracked asphalt of Outpost Phoenix. Lieutenant Sarah Vale stood at absolute attention, her boots caked in fine white dust, her eyes locked forward. She didn't let a single muscle twitch, despite the sweat trickling down her neck or the hostile crowd gathering around her. For months, she had been a target, but today was the day her commanders decided to make their move.

Colonel Sterling stepped out of the command building, his face a mask of cold arrogance. He stopped mere inches from Sarah, his shadow falling over her dusty camouflage uniform. He looked at her not as a decorated officer, but as an insect he was about to crush.

"Lieutenant Vale," Sterling’s voice boomed, echoing off the concrete barracks. "Take off your jacket."

A collective murmur rippled through the ranks of the assembled platoon. To order a female officer to strip off her uniform jacket in front of hundreds of soldiers was a blatant, humiliating violation of military protocol. It was a power play designed to break her spirit. Sarah remained frozen, her jaw clenched.

"I said, take it off, Lieutenant! Now!" Sterling roared, his face turning a deep, angry red.

Suddenly, several senior non-commissioned officers, loyal to the corrupt high command, began to chant. The rest of the platoon, pressured by the intense environment, joined in. A wall of voices erupted in unison: "Now! Now! Now!"

Sarah looked up at the second-floor balcony. General Vance and another older officer in immaculate dress uniforms were leaning over the iron railing, pointing down at her with furious expressions, joining the screaming chorus. They wanted to expose what lay beneath her jacket—a large wolf tattoo they believed would link her to a rogue militia and justify a dishonorable discharge. Slowly, Sarah reached for her zipper, letting the heavy camo jacket slide off her shoulders to reveal the massive grey wolf tattoo etched across her bare back.
