Previously: When military investigator Clara Vance is ordered to halt an unauthorized airfield operation, she confronts her own commanding officer—only to uncover a devastating family secret that changes everything.

A Legacy of Lies

Before Clara could demand answers, three armed mercenaries emerged from the gloom of the hangar, their rifles aimed directly at her. Donald looked up from the ground, his face pale with horror. He didn't look like a guilty man caught in a crime; he looked like a man who had just run out of time.

"Clara, listen to me," Donald whispered, his voice urgent as he stayed low. "These aren't my men. They belong to a shadow syndicate within the defense network. The cargo on that plane... it's the evidence your father gathered before they silenced him."

The words hit Clara like a physical blow. For twenty years, she had been told her father, Captain Marcus Vance, had died in a routine training accident. She had joined the Navy to honor his memory, never suspecting that his death was a cover-up.

"You're lying," Clara said, though her hand began to tremble. "You signed the clearance codes for this flight!"
"To get the evidence out of the country before they could destroy it!" Donald hissed. "I was trying to clear his name, Clara. I was trying to finish what Marcus started."

The lead mercenary stepped forward, his face obscured by a tactical mask. He raised his weapon, targeting Clara's chest. The metallic click of his rifle safety off echoed loudly in the damp air.

"Drop the weapon, Investigator," the lead mercenary commanded, his voice cold and devoid of emotion. "You are interfering with a classified operation. Drop it now, or you both die on this runway."

Clara stood between the mercenaries and the injured Admiral. She realized that Donald had been protecting her family's secret for two decades, carrying the burden alone. Now, the very people who had betrayed her father were standing right in front of her, ready to erase the last of the Vance legacy.
