A Corrupt Bureaucrat Stole an Old Veteran's Pension, Then a Black SUV Pulled Up
A Confrontation on the Sidewalk
The autumn sun did little to warm the cold concrete of the metropolitan sidewalk outside the veterans' clinic. Albert, a weathered veteran wearing a faded green camo cap and a worn green canvas jacket, stood quietly, clutching a small manila folder containing his life's security. For forty years, Albert had lived a modest, quiet life, asking for nothing more than the pension he had earned through blood, sweat, and sacrifice on distant battlefields. But today, his quiet existence was shattered by Lawrence, a ruthless young bureaucrat from the regional pension office.
Lawrence, immaculate in a dark grey designer suit, held a thick clipboard like a weapon. He looked at Albert not as a hero, but as an annoying line item on a budget sheet he wanted to erase. "Your pension has disappeared, old man," Lawrence sneered, stepping aggressively into Albert's space. "Someone like you no longer needs documents."

Albert tried to protest, explaining that his paperwork was perfectly in order, but Lawrence was done talking. With a sudden, violent shove, the younger man slammed Albert back against the cold brick wall of the clinic. The force of the impact jarred Albert's hand, knocking his most prized possession—a gold challenge coin given to him by his former commander—to the pavement. The coin rolled across the concrete with a sharp metallic ring, finally stopping near a polished black dress shoe that had suddenly appeared in the frame.
Albert looked up, his eyes defiant despite the pain in his back. "Son, you'd better look toward the road," he said softly. Lawrence scoffed, but the sudden, heavy rumble of powerful engines cut through the city noise. Three massive black SUVs pulled up to the curb, their doors flying open. Out stepped General Reynolds, a highly decorated officer in a pristine Army service uniform, his face carved from granite. He looked down at the rolling coin, then up at the trembling bureaucrat. "Pick it up," the General commanded.
