Previously: When a corrupt small-town sheriff tried to intimidate a returning soldier and her loyal K9 partner, he quickly realized he picked the wrong hero to mess with.

The Stakes Rise

Thomas’s face flushed a deep, angry red. He took a step back, his hand instinctively dropping to the holster at his hip. The diner patrons held their breath, terrified of what the volatile lawman might do next. But I stood my ground, my eyes locked onto his. I knew exactly who Thomas was, and more importantly, I knew the dark secrets he had been hiding from this town for years.

"Are you threatening a police officer, soldier?" Thomas hissed, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "I can have you locked up before your dog can even bark."

Within minutes, the wail of sirens echoed down the highway, and two squad cars screeched to a halt outside the diner.

Two young deputies rushed through the door, their hands on their weapons, but they froze when they saw me standing calmly beside Rex, who was in a perfect, disciplined guard stance. Thomas pointed a shaking finger at me.

"Arrest her! And impound that dangerous animal!" Thomas ordered, his voice cracking under the pressure.

The deputies hesitated, looking between their furious boss and a decorated soldier. I reached slowly into my jacket pocket, pulling out a sealed, official envelope. It contained bank statements and transaction records proving Thomas had been taking bribes from a local logging company to dump toxic waste on protected land—the very land where my father’s farm stood.
