The Unexpected Visitor

The rain beat heavily against the towering glass facade of Sterling & Co., the city's most exclusive luxury watch boutique. Inside, the atmosphere was a world apart—warm, silent, and smelling of rich leather and expensive polish. Liam, a dedicated young clerk dressed in a sharp navy blue vest, was meticulously arranging a display of diamond-encrusted chronographs. His manager, Sarah, stood nearby, her eyes scanning the room like a hawk. Sarah was a woman who valued prestige above all else, often reminding the staff that only the elite deserved their time.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors swung open. Instead of a wealthy collector or a high-society socialite, a fragile elderly woman in a wheelchair rolled into the showroom. Her name was Clara. She wore a faded wool coat, and her silver hair was damp from the storm. Before Liam could step forward, Sarah intercepted him with a harsh whisper. "Don't waste your time, Liam. We don't cater to beggars. Get her out of here before our real clients arrive."

Ignoring his manager's cold command, Liam walked over to Clara and offered a warm smile. With trembling fingers, Clara reached into her pocket and placed a heavily scratched, vintage gold watch onto the pristine glass counter. The leather strap was frayed, and the glass face was cloudy with age. Liam picked it up gently, intending to help, but Sarah marched over and snatched it from his hand.

"We don't repair trash here," Sarah sneered, tossing the watch back onto the counter. "Take your rubbish and leave."

Liam’s blood boiled. He picked up the watch and carefully fastened it back onto Clara’s frail wrist. "To her, it matters," Liam said firmly. Sarah leaned in close, her eyes flashing with anger. "You’re going to lose your job over this, Liam," she whispered. But Clara remained remarkably calm. She reached into her coat and pulled out a faded envelope, revealing an old black-and-white photo of a handsome young man wearing the exact same watch. Liam looked at the photo, then up at the giant oil painting of Arthur Sterling, the store's legendary founder, hanging on the wall. "Is he the founder?" Liam asked. Clara looked up with a serene smile and replied, "And I am his wife."
