The Forgotten Watch

The warm, golden light from the crystal sconces of Sterling & Co. bounced off polished glass cases containing watches worth more than a modest home. To Owen, a quiet young assistant wearing his freshly pressed charcoal grey vest, this place was a temple of craftsmanship. But to Victoria, the boutique’s cold-eyed manager, it was an exclusive club where only the wealthy belonged. Wearing a tailored navy blazer, she monitored the floor like a hawk, ready to swoop down on any element that disrupted the store's pristine aesthetic.

The heavy brass doors pushed open, and the soft squeak of wheels broke the silence. Beatrice, an elderly woman with neat silver hair, rolled her manual wheelchair onto the plush carpet. She wore a faded coat, and her hands trembled slightly as she approached the marble-topped display counter. With immense care, she placed a worn, scratched vintage watch onto the pristine marble.

"Could you please clean this for me, young man?" Beatrice asked softly. "It stopped ticking yesterday."

Owen smiled and reached for the watch, recognizing its historic value. But before his fingers could brush the metal, Victoria marched over. Her heels clicked sharply against the marble floors.

"We don't repair trash here," Victoria sneered, her voice dripping with condescension. "This is a high-end boutique, not a charity shop. Please take your junk and leave."

Owen felt a surge of indignation. Ignoring his manager's glaring eyes, he gently picked up the watch and fastened it securely back onto Beatrice's frail wrist.

"To her, it matters," Owen said quietly but firmly.

Victoria leaned in, her eyes narrowing into cold slits as she whispered fiercely in his ear.

"You're going to lose your job over this, Owen. Step away from her immediately."

But Beatrice remained completely unbothered. She reached into her bag and pulled out a faded, yellowed envelope, revealing a vintage black-and-white photograph.

"My husband wore it here," Beatrice murmured, pointing to the handsome man in the photo.

Owen looked from the photo to the large, gold-framed portrait of the company’s legendary founder, Arthur Sterling, hanging on the wall behind the counter. The resemblance was striking.

"Is he the founder?" Owen asked, his breath catching.

Beatrice looked up, a calm, powerful expression on her face.

"And I am his wife," she said simply, leaving both Owen and Victoria completely stunned.
