The Encounter at the Galleria

The high-end Galleria mall was bustling with weekend shoppers, the polished tile floors reflecting the bright, warm lights from the designer boutiques. Marcus walked a step behind his fiancée, Victoria, carrying several heavy shopping bags. Victoria was in her element, her sleek black wrap dress swaying as she critiqued every passerby with a practiced, judgmental air. Marcus, wearing his rugged utility jacket, felt increasingly out of place in this world of superficial luxury, but he tolerated it for the sake of their upcoming wedding.

Suddenly, the sharp sound of metal hitting the hard floor echoed through the corridor. A young woman on crutches, wearing a faded beige crewneck sweater, had lost her footing on the slick tile. She collapsed awkwardly, her canvas tote bag bursting open and spilling its contents across the pristine floor. Victoria stopped in her tracks, her face twisting into a sneer of pure disgust. Instead of offering a hand, she stood directly over the struggling girl.

"Watch where you're dragging yourself," Victoria hissed, not bothering to lower her voice. "Some of us are actually carrying expensive things."

The young girl, whose name was Olivia, flushed with deep embarrassment. Her hands trembled as she tried to gather her dropped belongings under the cold gaze of the onlookers. Disgusted by his fiancée’s cruelty, Marcus dropped Victoria's bags and rushed forward, kneeling beside Olivia.

"And who are you supposed to be? Her savior?" Victoria mocked, crossing her arms.

Marcus ignored her, focusing entirely on helping the girl. As he gathered her things, his fingers brushed against a cheap, tarnished gold chain with a heart-shaped pendant. He froze. His face went entirely pale. With trembling hands, he turned the pendant over and saw the hand-etched letter 'M' on the back. He whispered a quiet, disbelieving "No..." under his breath. Slowly, he pulled back his sleeve to reveal a faded tattoo on his wrist that read "DANY." Olivia gasped, her eyes filling with fresh tears as she whispered, "Daniel?"
