The dining room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of the overhead chandelier, casting long shadows across the oak table. It was supposed to be a normal Tuesday evening. On the table sat a platter of golden, crispy fried chicken, flanked by bowls of mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. But the peaceful atmosphere shattered the moment nine-year-old Maya took her first bite.

Suddenly, the young blonde girl froze. Her fork clattered against the porcelain plate, and her face scrunched in sudden, overwhelming distress. Before her mother, Ashley, could even ask what was wrong, Maya burst into hysterical tears. She sobbed uncontrollably, her small shoulders shaking as she buried her face in her hands.

Ashley watched her daughter with a tense, worried expression, resting her hand on her chin. Her heart hammered against her ribs. To anyone else, it might have looked like a child’s sudden tantrum, but Ashley knew her daughter. Maya was not prone to outbursts. There was a raw, deep-seated pain in her cries that terrified Ashley to her core.

"Maya, sweetheart, what is it? Is the food bad? Did you hurt yourself?" Ashley asked, her voice trembling as she reached across the table.

Maya shook her head violently, pointing a trembling finger at the half-eaten piece of chicken. Through her gasping sobs, she managed to choke out words that made the color drain completely from Ashley's face.

"It’s Daddy’s," Maya wept, her blue eyes wide with a mixture of confusion and hope. "Mommy, this is Daddy’s secret chicken. He made me promise I’d never forget the taste of the honey and rosemary. He’s alive, isn't he?"

Ashley felt the world tilt on its axis. Ten years ago, she had told Maya that her father, David, had died in a tragic accident. It was a lie designed to protect them both from the dangerous debts David had incurred. But now, a simple takeout meal from a new local diner threatened to tear that protective lie wide open.
