The rain was blinding, but David did not care. He ran through the dark streets, his eyes locked onto the retreating figure of the young girl. She slipped into a dilapidated brick apartment building at the end of an alley. Pushing open the heavy, rusted door, David followed her inside, his footsteps echoing in the damp stairwell.

He found her on the third floor, frantically trying to unlock a door with shaking hands. "Clara! Please, wait!" David cried out, holding his hands up. She spun around, backing against the door, her eyes filled with terror.

"Stay away from me! I didn't steal it! It's mine!" she screamed, tears streaming down her face.

David took a slow step forward, trying to calm his racing heart. "Clara, I don't care about the money. Where did you get that locket? Please, it's very important."

Clara sobbed, clutching her knees. "It's the only thing I have from my real parents. I was adopted... or maybe taken, I don't know. The people who raised me were cruel, and I ran away. I had to sell it to buy food."

David's eyes filled with tears. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet, retrieving a worn, laminated photograph he had kept close to his heart for fifteen years. It was the exact same picture of the baby girl, but in its original, larger form. He held it out to her. Clara looked at the photo, then at David, her jaw dropping in utter shock.

Before she could speak, the apartment door swung open. A tall, middle-aged man stepped out into the dim hallway. David froze as the light hit the man's face. It was Marcus, David's former best friend and the detective who had allegedly "investigated" Clara's disappearance fifteen years ago. Marcus stared at David, his face turning pale with sudden fear.
