The Slap of Forged Paper Echoed Through the Marble Hall

The chancery hall smelled of old wood and fresh fear. Sunlight poured through the clerestory windows, catching dust motes that danced around Diana's highlighted waves as she slammed the blood-type chart onto the desk. The sound cracked like a whip.

"Zero percent match, look here!" she announced, her voice syrupy with triumph. Her manicured finger stabbed at the page, then swung down to point at Chloe. "This child is not his. I have the proof."

Chloe flinched but didn't move from her spot near the center of the floor. Her dusty-rose pinafore was rumpled, her twin pigtails slightly askew, but her glistening eyes stayed fixed on the judge. She clutched the embossed blue court folder to her chest like a shield.

Judge Clara Winthrop raised one silver eyebrow. Her steel-blue eyes swept over Diana's performance with the patience of a hawk watching a mouse. "The court will verify this document," she said, her voice calm but carrying the weight of a gavel.

Diana's smile widened. She smoothed her deep plum velvet dress and crossed her arms, the diamond bracelet catching the light. "Verify all you want. Science doesn't lie."

But Chloe was already moving. The little girl rose on trembling legs and lifted the embossed silver hospital archive cylinder toward the bench. Her lower lip quivered, but her voice came out steady. "Please don't believe her lies."

The room went still. Diana's smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of doubt crossing her face before she masked it with a sneer. "What is that, a toy?"

Judge Winthrop leaned forward, her black judicial robe rustling. She extended a commanding hand, and Chloe placed the cylinder into her palm with the reverence of a sacred offering. The judge turned it over, studying the seal.

"Open the blue court folder," she instructed, her eyes never leaving the cylinder. Chloe's small fingers fumbled with the folder's clasp, and she pulled out a crisp document, holding it up.

The judge broke the cylinder's seal. Inside was a second document—a neonatal heel-print card, yellowed with age, and a lab report with a red stamp. She read it in silence, her expression shifting from curiosity to thunder.

"You switched the nursery tags," she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. Diana's face drained of all color. "This is the original blood profile from the hospital. It says 99.99% paternity."

Diana's mouth opened and closed like a fish gasping for air. "That's—that's fake!" she sputtered, but no one believed her. Sweat beaded on her temple.

Judge Winthrop raised her hand. Two uniformed officers stepped forward from the shadows by the pilasters. "You are banished forever," she declared. "Leave this court—and this family—immediately."

As Diana was led away, her heels clicking in a frantic rhythm against the checkered marble, Chloe exhaled softly. The judge wrapped a fierce arm around her shoulders, pulling her close.

"You were very brave," Judge Winthrop murmured, her voice warm now. "But this isn't over. There's more to this story, isn't there?"

Chloe nodded, looking up at the judge with those glistening eyes. "There's another envelope," she whispered. "In the folder."

The judge's brow furrowed. She reached for the blue court folder and flipped it open, revealing a second sealed envelope with a name scrawled across the front. Her eyes widened.

"This changes everything," she said, her voice barely audible.

Outside, the sound of a police car's siren faded into the distance. Chloe leaned her head against the judge's robe and closed her eyes.
